Their are two Civil War forts near
Savannah. Fort Jackson, is the oldest of the two forts. Fort Jackson was originally built as an earthen fort during
the Revolutionary war. It was reinforced with brick in the 1840s. This fort was one of the last forts to fall to Union troops during the Civil War. Confederate troops occupied Fort Jackson until General Sherman’s troops arrived in Savannah on December 22 1864. The old fort is operated by The Coastal Heritage Society today and is open for tours.
